Ingredients:

For the Filling

  • 5 cups sliced apples (about 2 pounds, or 4 large apples)
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Topping

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup old-fashioned oats
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and lightly butter a baking dish. In a large bowl, combine 5 cups sliced apples (about 2 pounds or 4 large apples) with granulated sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla extract, tossing until the apples are well coated.
  2. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish. In the same bowl, stir together flour, oats, brown sugar, salt, and cinnamon. Add the melted butter and mix until the topping is evenly coated and crumbly using clean hands works best. Evenly sprinkle the topping over the apples.
  3. Bake for 45–60 minutes, until the apples are tender and the topping is golden brown. Let cool slightly before serving. This is especially delicious warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
